2022 Vote by Mail Application

  • Last day to submit for the September 6th State Primary is August 29, 2022
  • Last day to submit for the November 8th General Election is November 1, 2022
  • The application must be in the Town Clerk’s office no later than 5 PM to be eligible to receive your ballot by mail. It’s highly recommended to submit the application at your earliest convenience to avoid delays in the US postal system.

    • Email: ddunfee@nahant.org. Please note: If you’re emailing your application, you need to sign it in a way that can be compared to your hand-written signature. Electronic signatures, scanned applications, and photos of applications are acceptable. Typed signatures cannot be accepted.

Dates for In-Person Early Voting: September 6th State Primary

  • Early Voting is available to Massachusetts registered voters for state primaries, presidential primaries and state elections. Early voting is not available for local elections.
  • No application or mailing necessary…just show up and vote!

    • Monday, August 29, 2022 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
    • Tuesday, August 30, 2022 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
    • Wednesday, August 31, 2022 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

    • Friday, September 2, 2022 9:00 AM – NOON
  • All early voting will take place in Town Hall.
  • Once your ballot has been accepted by your local election office, you can’t take your ballot back or vote on Election Day.
  • If you’re applying for a primary ballot, and you are not registered in a party, you must indicate which party’s ballot you want to receive. If you don’t provide a party on your application, you will not receive a primary ballot.

Early Voting FAQs

If I vote early in person can I appear to vote in person at the polls on Election Day?

  • YES – If your vote by mail ballot has not been received back to the Town Clerk’s Office, you may still appear to vote in person at the polls on Election Day or at an early voting site. These voters will be required to complete additional paperwork and will need to show an ID. Should your mail in ballot be received after you voted early in person or at the polls on Election Day that ballot will be rejected and will not be counted.
  • NO – If a vote by mail ballot has already been received back by the Town Clerk’s Office. A returned vote by mail ballot is considered cast and you will not be eligible to vote by mail, early in person or in person at the polls on Election Day.

If I applied for a vote by mail ballot, can I appear to vote in person at an early voting site or at the polls on Election Day?

NO – If you appeared to vote early in person your ballot will be considered cast and you will not be eligible to vote by mail, or in person at the polls on Election Day. Voting in Person at the Polls after submitting an early ballot is prohibited as outlined in 950 CMR 4 7.19.

When & how is an early voter’s ballot (by mail or in person) cast?

All vote by mail and early voting in person ballots will be opened and inserted into a tabulator at the polls on election day. Until Election Day, the unopened ballots are stored and kept secured. Voting in Person at the Polls after submitting an early ballot is prohibited as outlined in 950 CMR 4 7.19.

Town Elections 2022

Nomination papers for candidates running for Town Offices and Committee Members will be available in the Town Clerk’s Office January 20, 2022.  Office hours are Monday -Thursday 8 am – 4pm & Friday 8-12:30 pm.

The Town Election will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022

The Election polling hours are: 7:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the Main Hall of the Nahant Town Hall.

All use of parking in the rear and side of Town Hall is encouraged with handicapped parking in each lot.

2022 Census

The Annual Street List (census) form has been mailed to every household in town.  Please take the time to respond as soon as possible so that we can keep your voter information up to date, and our population information accurate!  If you did not receive a form, please give us a call! 781-581-0018

Duties of the Town Clerk

The Town Clerk is the Chief Election Official. The Clerk supervises voter registration, oversees polling places, election officers, and the general conduct of all elections. The Clerk directs the preparation of ballots, polling places, voting equipment, voting lists, administers campaign finance laws, certifies nomination papers and initiative petitions, and serves on the Board of Registrars. The Clerk’s office conducts the annual town census and prepares the street list of residents.
 
The Town Clerk is the keeper of the town seal. The Town Clerk attests by signature and seal to bonds, contracts, bylaws, resolutions and any other documents requiring town certification. The Clerk provides certified copies of vital records and conducts genealogical research for members of the public, and is responsible for maintenance, disposition, and preservation of municipal archival records and materials. The Town Clerk administers the oath of office to all town officials, elected and appointed.
 
The Town Clerk certifies the residency of veterans’ who qualify for state bonuses, receives board and committee meeting postings, administers and records oaths of office to town officials; submits zoning by-law and town by-law changes to the Attorney General, and sends the Jury List to the Secretary of State. The Town Clerk is also responsible for overseeing the State mandated compliance of all employees, and board and committee members, to be sure they follow through annually with any required Conflict of Interest / State Ethics Laws documentation.
 
In addition, the Town Clerk issues marriage licenses, dog tag licenses, storage of flammables, business certificates, and raffle permits, and serves as the Chief Public Records Access Officer.

Attention Dog Owners

Any resident seasonal or full time who owns a dog must license that dog or dogs on a yearly basis, please contact the Town Clerk or fill out the application that is attached to the 2022 Street List/Census.
