Northern Strand Extension Project

After attending the public meeting on March 16, 2023 regarding the Northern Strand Extension project and listening to the response of our residents, Town Officials decided to send a letter to the Chief Engineer of MassDOT and local and state representatives urging them to collect additional data and public responses. We are requesting they conduct a pilot traffic lane elimination featuring the proposed bike lanes, conduct a traffic study on the real impact of the proposed project and host in-person public meetings. While we fully support the Northern Strand Extension, even with reservations on the current design, we hope they will listen to our requests and public responses before moving forward. The project seeks to provide safer and improved transportation access for bicycle users and pedestrians.

Northern Strand Extension Plans

Proposal

The proposed project’s goal is to provide a separated shared-use facility for non-motorized transportation, the entire length of the Northern Strand trail network. This project extends from the current terminus at Western Ave in Lynn and would enable users to reach the Lynn/Nahant Shore via a separated shared-use facility along existing roads. The proposed project seeks to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and accessibility within the last leg of this regional network formerly known as Bike to the Sea.
