Sumner Tunnel Closure Information

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is closing the Sumner Tunnel/Route 1A South for 8 weeks from July 5, 2023 to August 31, 2023. There will be impacts to regional travel however there are alternate routes and travel options available.

North of Boston Alternate Travel Options

Another great travel alternative is the MBTA Lynn to Boston Ferry which just opened. From Lynn, the ferry will depart from the Blossom Street Pier and parking at the pier is free. From Boston to Lynn the ferry will depart Long Wharf South gate four near the Aquarium stop on the Blue Line. During the Sumner Tunnel closing, several ferries will operate at a discounted rate. Click here for a full list of ferry fares. Bikes are allowed on the ferry as well.
