Open Space and Recreation Plan Committee

We are pleased to share that Nahant’s Open Space and Recreation Plan has received final approval from DCS and the Town is eligible to apply for DCS grants through May 2029. Below you will find a direct link to the plan and also the approval letter from the state.

On April 11, 2022 via Zoom the Open Space and Recreation Plan Committee along with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) held an open forum to discuss updating the Town’s Open and Space and Recreation Plan. The meeting was open to the public and feedback and questions from residents was welcomed. The update to the plan will serve to guide the Town’s decisions on open space and recreation activities for the next seven years. Mission:

The Open Space and Recreation Plan Committee was appointed in late May 2019 as a joint appointment by the Moderator and Board of Selectmen (pursuant to Article 29 of the 2014 Annual Town Meeting). The Committee held its first meeting on July 30, 2019, and has been meeting as needed, typically monthly, to review the open spaces and recreation areas in Nahant.  

The Committee is charged with drafting and implementing an updated Open Space and Recreation Plan that includes an inventory of open spaces and recreation areas in town. The Committee will use available funding (authorized at the 2019 Annual Town Meeting) to engage with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council for the public outreach phase of the Plan in addition to purchasing the required materials and operational tools for the updated Plan.

The Committee is currently working on a draft of the Open Space and Recreation Plan, with the assistance of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, and hopes to have it ready for public comment between the late winter and early spring months of 2022. The Committee is also working with the Town of Nahant and DPW on addressing invasive species in the Bailey Hill area adjacent to the Nahant Heritage Trail with a Community Preservation Act grant approved at the 2021 Annual Town Meeting.  

The Committee looks forward to continuing its work in 2022 with additional public outreach and with the goal of issuing an updated Open Space and Recreation Plan for approval by the Commonwealth that can serve Nahant in the years ahead.
