“1893: Looking East / Looking West“
This concert features Nahant resident, violinist Katharina Radlberger and her string quartet “Fin de Siècle” with two of the most beloved string quartets in the repertoire:
Antonin Dvorak‘s “American” and Debussy‘s only string quartet. The remarkable fact about these two contrasting and beautiful masterworks: they are both written the same year – 1893. Dvorak wrote his work “looking West” during his stay in North America. The great impressions of the New World such as Spiritual melodies, Native American rhythms and even birds singing got transferred into his music, while at the same time Debussy’s interest went “looking East” – his curiosity for the exotic asian music got expressed with impressionistic textures and unveils a “modern” sensual atmosphere.
We will introduce both works by telling fun and interesting stories about the composers and their works during this 90min concert talk. There will be no intermission.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Nahant Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
Members of ‚Fin de Siècle’: Sarah Ibbett and Katharina Radlberger, violins, Karen McConomy, viola and Michal Shein, cello
