Nahant Reads Together, The Garden of Martyrs (Free and open to the public — masks required)

October 16, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Attending/Invited: Free and open to the public — masks required
We invite you to read The Garden of Martyrs, a murder tale based on actual events taking place in 1805-6. The main character, Father John Cheverus, has an unusual connection to Nahant. In addition, the book explores an early example (but far from the earliest example) of prejudice in the US. Books are available to check out (library card not needed), or the ebook version can be downloaded from Hoopla (card needed).
Today, we will look at excerpts of an opera that was made from the novel, composed by Eric Sawyer, who has kindly given us permission to show them in this program. Whether or not you have read the novel, we hope you will join in the conversation!
